About Seven Falls at Sabino Canyon

Seven Falls is the crown jewel of Tucson hiking and a destination that rewards your effort with one of the most photogenic spots in all of Southern Arizona. Starting at the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, you will follow the Bear Canyon Trail through classic Sonoran Desert terrain before descending into a lush riparian corridor that feels worlds apart from the surrounding arid landscape. The trail begins on a well-maintained path that crosses open desert dotted with saguaros, prickly pear, and barrel cactus.

After roughly two miles, you will reach the Bear Canyon creek bed, where the route transitions to a more rugged, rock-hopping experience. This creek crossing section is where most first-timers slow down, and rightfully so. The rocks can be slippery, especially after recent rain, so sturdy footwear with good grip is essential.

Trekking poles help tremendously here. As you work your way upstream, the canyon walls begin to narrow and the vegetation shifts to cottonwoods and Arizona sycamores. The sound of flowing water grows louder with each step, building anticipation.

When you finally round the last bend, all seven tiers of cascading waterfalls come into view, tumbling over smooth granite into inviting pools below. During peak water flow in February and March, the falls are genuinely spectacular. Even in drier months, the tiered rock formations and reflecting pools make the trek worthwhile.

Swimming is popular here during warmer months, but be aware that the pools are shallow and the rocks around them can be dangerously slick. Flash flood danger is real in this canyon, so never attempt this hike if thunderstorms are in the forecast. Check weather conditions carefully before heading out.

The trailhead parking lot fills up fast on weekends, especially during the cooler months when Tucson hiking is at its peak. Arriving before 8 AM on Saturdays is strongly recommended. There is no shade for large portions of the trail, so bring more water than you think you need.

A minimum of three liters per person is wise. The $5 vehicle fee is payable at the recreation area entrance, and restrooms are available at the trailhead. This is not a loop trail, so you will retrace your steps on the return, but the shifting afternoon light on the canyon walls makes the walk back feel like an entirely different hike.
