About Papago Park - Hole in the Rock

Hole in the Rock is one of the most photographed and visited natural landmarks in the Phoenix area. While calling it a "hike" might be generous, this short walk to a fascinating geological formation is an essential Arizona experience that everyone from toddlers to grandparents can enjoy. It also happens to be one of the best sunset viewing spots in the entire Valley.

The formation is a large natural opening in one of Papago Park's distinctive red sandstone buttes. These buttes are made of conglomerate sandstone that was deposited roughly 6 to 15 million years ago during a period when this area was covered by shallow lakes and streams. Over millions of years, wind and water erosion carved out the opening that we see today, creating a natural window roughly 15 feet wide and 10 feet tall.

To reach it, you park in the designated lot off Galvin Parkway (near the Phoenix Zoo entrance) and follow a short, paved path that leads to the base of the butte. From there, a brief climb up a well-worn rocky slope brings you into the opening. The rock is smooth and grippy in most conditions, and handrails assist at the steepest points.

Small children may need a hand, but it is genuinely accessible for almost everyone. Once inside the opening, you are treated to framed views of downtown Phoenix to the west and the distinctive red buttes of Papago Park in every direction. The Phoenix skyline looks particularly striking from here at sunset, when the warm light floods through the opening and paints everything golden.

During the solstices, the light creates interesting patterns that archaeologists believe may have held significance for the Hohokam people who lived here centuries ago. The area around Hole in the Rock is a park with walking paths, picnic areas, and open green spaces. Many people combine a visit here with trips to the Phoenix Zoo, the Desert Botanical Garden, or the Hall of Flame Museum, all of which are within a five-minute drive.

You can also walk to the nearby Double Butte Loop Trail if you want a longer excursion after visiting the formation. A few notes: parking can be challenging on weekend afternoons, especially during the cooler months when the entire park is busy. The lot is not huge, so plan to arrive early or be patient.

There is no fee to visit. Dogs on leash are welcome. Sunset is far and away the best time to visit for photography, but expect crowds during that golden hour window.

If you want a quieter experience, early morning on a weekday is your best bet. While this is not a challenging outing by any measure, it is a quintessential Phoenix landmark that deserves a spot on every visitor's list.
