About Lost Dog Wash Trail

Lost Dog Wash Trail is one of the most beloved trails in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and has a devoted following among Scottsdale residents, particularly those with dogs. The trail earns its popularity through a combination of accessible terrain, beautiful desert scenery, and a well-designed trailhead that makes every visit comfortable and convenient. The Lost Dog Wash Trailhead features a large parking lot, clean restrooms, drinking water, and waste bag stations.

It is one of the better-equipped trailheads in the preserve system and accommodates the heavy traffic this trail receives. From the parking area, the trail heads north into the preserve along the edge of its namesake wash. The first section of the trail is wide and gently graded, following the wash through a corridor of palo verde and mesquite trees.

The sandy wash bottom is visible alongside the trail, and after rainstorms you might find small pools of water here. The vegetation is lush by desert standards, with mature saguaros standing like sentinels along the ridgelines and brittlebush adding splashes of yellow during the spring bloom season. As you progress northward, the trail begins to gain elevation gradually.

The terrain becomes slightly rockier but remains well-maintained and easy to follow. Views of the McDowell Mountains grow more impressive as you climb, with the rugged granite peaks providing a dramatic backdrop. The preserve feels expansive here, and the sounds of suburban Scottsdale fade behind you.

The turnaround point for most hikers is where Lost Dog Wash Trail meets the junction with other preserve trails, roughly 2.3 miles from the trailhead. From this junction, you can extend your hike by connecting to the Sunrise Trail, Prospector Trail, or the network of paths that lead deeper into the preserve.

The junction area sits on slightly higher ground and offers nice views back toward the Valley. What makes this trail special is its community. On any given morning, you will encounter a steady stream of dog walkers, joggers, families with kids, and retirees enjoying the desert air.

The trail has a welcoming, friendly atmosphere that reflects the neighborhood it serves. Dogs of every breed and size are out in force, all on leash as required by preserve rules. For those with dogs, this is truly one of the best options in the metro area.

The terrain is gentle on paws, the trail is wide enough to pass other groups comfortably, and there are enough interesting smells and sights to keep your dog engaged the entire way. Just bring extra water for your companion, as there is no reliable water source on the trail. Parking fills up on weekend mornings during peak season, but the lot is large enough that extreme waits are uncommon.

If you find it full, the Gateway Trailhead is a short drive away and offers access to the same trail network.
